Bigger than Big by TheTerritorialTrike Bigger than Big by TheTerritorialTrike
Over the course of time, several titanic creatures came to be. Above, three of these animals are depicted.

(top) Sea Amphi- known from an isolated vertebrae from New Zealand. Material was lost when the ship carrying the material sunk.
Size- ~200 tonnes, ~40 meters long
(middle) Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus)- known from every sea or ocean on the planet and hundreds of recorded individuals
Size- up to 172 tonnes, up to 31 meters
(bottom) Amphicoelias altus- known from a fragile isolated material, as well as juvenile remains
Size- 122 tonnes, 49 meters long
--------------
Amphicoelias size based on Carpenter (2006), Sea Amphi size based on rough estimates of a scaled up S. sikanniensis. Take the sea amphi claims especially to be false until the rumors get evidence behind it.

Yeah, I've heard about sea amphi.
If it really was that big, it would weigh more than 200 tonnes (more like 260 at 41m) but the specimen has no scientific value because we can't replicate the measurements.

The thought of animals bigger than blue whales is epic nonetheless.

I feel like stories like these just go to show how little we actually know about prehistoric life.

Can you please link me to the scientific article on the Sea Amphi? I'd like to read it.

No such paper exists. If you look below in the comments, you'll see the material was lost before a paper was written. So take the rumors to be false until evidence proves otherwise. I should have made that clear in the description. I'll edit it.

You know, there may be a blue whale that weighs in at 250 tonnes.

Yes, but I tried to go with the largest whale we've weighed right now.

In the 1870s, a single isolated vertebrae was unearthed in Late Triassic rocks from New Zealand. The bone was icthyosaur in origin.  It was twice as large as the vertebrae of the largest known icthyosaur of today. Unfortunately, while on a boat transferring the fossil to America for study, the boat sunk in a horrible storm. A lot of rumors though, so I'm not sure as to the validity of such claims. I first learned about it here:randomdinos.deviantart.com/art…

This chart isn't really meant to be the most scientific, but to give a sense of scale. If I did, I'd probably not put Amphicoellias on it either.
