Paleos - Drepanosaurus

Description

Drepanosaurus unguicaudatus, is certainly one of the strangest creatures in all of Paleos. It currently resides in the north wing of the Brenner Family Herpetarium near the entrance and aquarium. It is exhibited along other Triassic oddities such as Sharovipteryx, Hypuronector, and Teraterpeton. It originally lived in the trees of the Italian floodplain of the Zorzino Formation. Despite appearances, its closest living relatives are its distant cousins crocodiles and birds. This fascinating creature uses its large claw on its first digit to dig out bark and get a taste of the delicious insects inside. The species's arm anatomy is highly modified, allowing it use its fingers with an amount of strength which would not have been achievable with a typical arm setup. Once the bark of the tree is penetrated, Drepanosaurus will grab the tasty grubs with its bird-like skull. It has grasping hands to grip onto the branches it calls home. Perhaps, strangest of all, it has a prehensile tail which has a clawed tip. In reality, the end of the tail is not a claw but several fused vertebrae. It uses this "claw" to get a better grip on the tree.
Paleos houses six Drepanosaurus, four of which are female and two males, however only three individuals are available for viewing at one time, as the two groups are rotated in and off-exhibit for multiple reasons. Both males and females exhibit the beautiful teal face markings. However, only the males of the species exhibit a high degree of territoriality. The species has somewhat become a sort of mini celebrity, and is often a symbol of the herpetarium itself. It is not uncommon to see an unusually high amount of people crowding around the habitat. It isn't hard to see why the this anomaly has become a symbol of the park itself.
